What is it?

Fast-growing companies or high-growth firms play a crucial role in the development of a regional economy: they not only bring innovative business activities to the market and create new jobs, but they are also particularly suited for finding sustainable solutions for most pressing societal issues.

To understand the lifecycle, success factors, and unique challenges of these vital economic drivers, we conduct extensive research into their growth journeys and patterns. Our insights are based on our long-standing research on fast-growing companies in the Netherlands as well as abroad.

We analyse the growth landscape of national/regional ecosystems, on behalf of municipalities, provinces and other (semi-)public organisations. We provide them with state-of-the-art research insights and support them in crafting indicators for innovative policies to support the sustainable growth of all SMEs.

Who is it for?

Our reports provide valuable insights for diverse stakeholders—offering policymakers evidence-based frameworks for effective support programs, entrepreneurs practical benchmarks and growth strategies, investors clearer patterns for informed decisions, and ecosystem partners opportunities for meaningful collaborations—all contributing to stronger regional economic development and innovation.

What we offer:

  • Tailored and customised dashboards (local, regional SME Dashboards, national or European-level)

  • (Sectoral) growth paths and business modeling

  • Policy recommendations

ScaleUp Dashboard 2025: The State-of-the-Art Report on the Dutch climate for high growth

Since 2015, Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship (ECE) has been conducting research into Dutch high-growth firms. Our annual ScaleUp Dashboard features the latest figures on the Dutch high-growth landscape, highlighting the most important developments, challenges, and opportunities. In collaboration with Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, and The Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), ECE is happy to present the 2025 edition of the ScaleUp Dashboard release on the 4th of March 2026.

Why did high-growth firms in the Netherlands just cut 7.6% of their jobs?

The latest CBS data reveals that Dutch high-growth firms (HGFs) lost total employment by 7.6% in 2024, the second-largest single-year job reduction since 2020... Download our 2025 dashboard to find out why.

The average age of HGFs also reached 16.7 years in 2024— the oldest since 2010! Our Top 250 2025 research observes a similar trend, wherein the fastest-growing cohort of Dutch HGFs has nearly doubled in average age. Importantly, we see the crucial pipeline of young firms shrink dramatically.

Who takes the biggest slice?

The Dutch high-growth ecosystem is driven by knowledge-intensive and service-oriented industries.

Between 2020 and 2024, four sectors formed the backbone of growth: Trade, Specialised Business Services, Information & Communication, and Health and Welfare Care. The prevalence of these 4 sectors points to an ecosystem that succeeds in high-value, non-physical goods and services.

Yet we are constantly reminded of the dynamic nature of this landscape:

In 2024, Information & Communication experienced the most significant drop, losing 75 HGFs since 2023. Furthermore, Horeca registered the largest growth, gaining 25 HGFs from 2023 to 2024.

What does this imply about the value drivers of Netherlands’s ecosystem today—and where does the future of your industry head to? Moreover, what provinces and sectors are at risk of volatility?
